Great post! Lots of good tips. Lately I've been feeling that the internet was boring me, so I've returned to reading dead trees. I can't say I regret the loss; reading voraciously again seems to have rekindled my mind. I think you've provided me with a few ideas to rejuvenate my web life, thanks!

I agree with your point about books... they need to be more available online. There's not a lot of depth, at the surface anyway. Have you heard about the Internet Archive BookServer? Looks promising... http://www.archive.org/bookserver

@Jake Seliger: Some of the most fruitful reading I've done on the internet is book suggestions... keep it up!

In some ways, you're describing problems similar to those Julian Sanchez discussed in The Perils of Pop Philosophy (which I discuss in turn at the link). As Sanchez says:

"Those are real enough, but there’s also the problem that the general glut of information and opinion makes it disconcertingly easy to kid yourself about how well you understand a particular topic."

Skimming vacuous websites won't get us to knowledge, and at this point, reading books more often will. The trick is being able to find the pointers to the books you should read, which I think the web is very good at, and which I try to contribute to in my own small way.
